American Road Trip - part #2 — Zion National Park, Las Vegas

I’ve been to Zion national park twice before, and until I went to Yosemite it was my favourite national park. Zion is blummin’ stunning. It has a bit of everything — red desert stone, green trees, blue water. It’s great.

This time we decided to do a nice simple walk called the Canyon Overlook Trail. It’s just about a mile round trip. The view at the end is just… amazing. It’s about as good as Angel’s Landing and you don’t have to kill yourself to see it.

Of course my go-to camera for this trip was the Lumix GH5 with the Olympus 9-18mm ultra wide lens. My fave combo for travel. If you don’t own one yet, just get one. Get one!

Zion - Canyon Overlook Trail

There was a bride and groom on the trail with us. That’s how easy it was. They got the couple to sit right on the edge of that rock. The bride screamed the whole time but I’m pretty sure the photos will be epic.

The terrain is simple enough, with just the odd cliff-hugging moment, or board-walk. I really enjoyed it. The view blew my tiny mind. Again, I’m not sure photos can really show you just how vast it all is. It’s maddening! But hopefully these images give you an idea.

Las Vegas — night time photography

Now, I am no stranger to Vegas. I got married there,, and this was my fifth visit. I wanted a break from the national parks and photography so I only took my camera out the once.

I chose my Lumix S1, and tried out some hand-held long exposure photography. It really is remarkable. I could get to about 2 seconds before things got a bit wobbly. Most of these shots are between one second and half a second. Really really cool because I hate tripods at the best of times, never mind trying to lug one down a busy street at night.

Vegas was just as Vegas-y as ever: expensive, over the top, and brilliant fun. It was the perfect break from driving. But after those four days of lights and drinks, I was more than ready to head back into the wilderness!
